African farmers are growing much of the country’s organic foods for the European market, where the desire for organic foods has been growing very rapidly.

The organic market in Europe is said to be growing much faster than that for conventional foods, giving African farmers the impetus to make more money producing the crops.

Nearly 5,000 farmers in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal, and Sierra Leone are engaged in the export of organically-grown produce to Europe, which has been given certification by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The organic growing has proven to be well suited for small-scale farmers, because they are not expected to purchase the usual chemicals and pesticides which are used on larger farms.
